Riding the Rollercoaster

Anyone under the misconception that men don't cry have obviously never watched the X Factor. My initial response watching all the tears over the weekend was irritation, until I remembered how I'd cried myself when I'd received a publisher rejection.
And cried when I failed to place in a writing competition. Not to mention the tears of frustration trying to overcome brain injury symptoms in order to write...
If you care that much about something tears are sometimes inevitable. And you have to care that much to withstand the inevitable lows of your journey as a writer.
The highs are fantastic- getting your first full request, the call, your first five star review, the nice email from a reader, watching your rankings rise...
But whether you're published or unpublished you will know about the lows - the rejections, not placing in a competition, a horrible review, an annoying comment from an Internet troll that you have to ignore, watching your rankings fall...

When you're hurtling down that roller coaster you just have to grit your teeth, accept you're never going to please all the people all the time and know that as quickly as you're falling you'll be rising again soon.

I came across this fabulous list on Buzfeed. It lists the number of times famous authors have been knocked back: http://www.buzzfeed.com/stmartinspress/20-brilliant-authors-whose-work-was-initially-reje-7rut
Read it, hold your head high and ride that roller coaster
:-)
And if you want an example of how quickly fortunes can be reversed read my call story: http://minxesofromance.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/sub-to-sale-in-24-hours-my-call-story.html

Confessions of a Chalet Girl - My Inspiration

Choosing the location for my debut novel was easy, I've spent a lot of time in the French and Swiss Alps and fell totally in love...with the scenery :-) But seriously, you couldn't pick a better setting for a romance - there's snow, hot tubs, roaring log fires, fit ski-hunks...need I say more?

The scenery is beautiful and dramatic and I always feel inspired to write when I'm in the Alps. I'm actually sitting in a chalet in Switzerland right now, writing my second chalet girl story!

My Pinterest Story Board is probably the best way to soak up the feel of the story and has pictures of my hero inspiration as well as the notorious Wonderbar that inspired the rather unusual story opening - http://pinterest.com/lorrainecwilson/confessions-of-a-chalet-girl/

If you'd like to hear news of the next chalet girl novella please visit my author page on Facebook (and remember to 'like' me ;-) or my website. I hope you'll be as captivated by my 'winter playground' as I am!

'Set in the exclusive Swiss ski resort of Verbier, the winter playground of the rich and famous, Confessions of a Chalet Girl is a fun and flirty contemporary romance novella' “This was such an amazingly intriguing novella. I found myself wanting to know what would happen next and how long before they would come clean with one another. It was sexy and fun. All the things I look for in a good read." Confessions of a Book Whore, Goodreads review. “All in all a fun and cute romance with some steamy scenes. Definitely a read lovers of the genre will enjoy.” Goodreads review Amazon UK link http://amzn.to/106lMp1Amazon.com link http://amzn.to/193V7cUNetGalley link https://www.netgalley.com/catalog/show/id/32446

SUB TO SALE in 24 hours – My Call Story

Monday 16:00 – Receive double rejection email from an Editor. It’s a nice rejection with an invitation for further submission but still…am plunged into instant depression!
Monday 17:00 – Try to elude the self-pitying vortex by submitting to Harper Impulse, Harper Collins' new Digital First imprint http://www.harperimpulseromance.com
Monday 18:00 – Fall into self-pitying vortex anyway.
Tuesday 10:30 – Notice there’s an email from Harper Impulse in my inbox and assume it’s just a confirmation of receipt email. Then I read it and see the words:
They. Want. To. Call. Me.
Tuesday 11:00 – Enter into flurry of emails with writing friends. Cue overuse of OMG and exclamation marks!!!
Tuesday 11:30 – Kim Young calls. I evict a crew of terriers from my office in case they want to join in the conversation. I try to sound like a normal person rather than the blithering-woman-in-shock I really am. Little wonder as I’ve gone from rejection to submission to sale in under 24 hours!
Tuesday 15:00 – Receive confirmation email that proves it hasn’t all been a dream and I’ve got a four book deal.

Thank you Harper Impulse for making my dreams come true J

‘Confessions of a Chalet Girl’ is a fun, flirty read set in the exclusive Swiss ski resort of Verbier, the winter playground of the rich and famous.
As the daughter of an alcoholic mother, 23-year-old chalet girl Holly Buchanan is used to putting on an act to keep her secrets hidden. Blending in can be exhausting so when her sexy new boss Scott suggests she lightens up and has some fun, her first instinct is to pray for an avalanche to bury her. 28 year old owner of Luxury Chalet Experiences, Scott Hamilton, comes from a family where hiding the truth has had devastating consequences. However, he’s tried to put the past behind him and chooses to live life to the full both on and off the piste. He knows sleeping with the staff is courting danger but it’s an irresistible challenge to prove to Holly that losing control can be fun.
